Dreaming of Something Other than SugarPlums

November 28th, 2012 at 10:14 pm

OK, so yeah, it's been almost a year since my last post. I am beginning to think that my work is seasonal, and the only month I am available to Blog is during December.

Nonetheless, I am doing something tonight that I have never done on my own. I will purchase 3 Powerball tickets. One each for myself, my son, and my wife. The numbers will be random, maybe to save time at the store, but more likely because I believe fully in luck, fate, and the science behind this not-so-random universe in which we live.

Sure, I have thrown in a buck here and there when the lottery exceeds a given amount (used to be $100MM, but that is too common now), but I have never had to make the actual purchase.

Probably the most daunting decision is where to buy... I think I will find some rundown looking place in the middle of nowhere that looks like it needs a touch of fate.

Anyway, I'm human, so I couldnt help but dream about what it would mean for me to win. I would probably take the $375MM one-time payout, since none of us is guaranteed tomorrow, and I want to enjoy the results while I can.

What are the first 5 things u would do with that kind of money? I mean besides the drop-in-the-pan things like paying off any debt and giving all immediate family members $1MM each. Spend a few minutes dreaming - it's that time of year, after all. What would you do...

I would definitely find a charity to donate to. I think likely the wounded warrior project would be first on the list, as would a local shelter. I don't know that I would give all relatives money...mostly because I know they can't handle what they have now!

Aside from the obvious, that is helping my family, I would donate lots of money to our local library. I dream of living in a town that has a magnificent library. I would also find two charities related to helping children and a no-kill animal shelters.

I would keep 10 million and invest it sensibly in a mix of stock and bond index funds. That would throw off enough income that I could live as I pleased with no worries about income or running out of money. If I drew 3% per year (300k), the principal should grow and eventually go to my children. I sell all of my possessions and travel, living for a time in one place then another, renting homes wherever I went.

With the lion's share of the winnings, I would start a charitable foundation. I would invest that as well, so that I would have funds to give away every year. Anyone in the world could request any amount of money for any reason at all. I would have a staff who would read through the requests, and a board who would make the final decision as to which ones would be funded. I would chair the board. The requests which would most interest me would be those which were asking for a hand up (rather than a hand out).

Of course, since I am not buying any tickets, my chance of winning is very slim. Wink

I would travel and really stay in places for a couple of weeks at a time as opposed to the one day in one country whirlwind tour sort of travel. I would donate to certain charities, and fully fund college for not only my own kids, but for my nieces and nephews. I would go back to school at some point and take the science and history classes I want to take. I think I'd also start a small independent publishing company.

I would probably take the one-time payout, as well, since there is no insurance of tomorrow... and I would invest a ton of it. I would make full scholarships available for my relatives' kids (with requirements). My time in the service would lead me to donate to some military charities, like creditcardfree mentioned. I would also continue my professional training, and start some clinics in areas with acute medical need around the world.
